Stitch by stitch
'Stitch by stitch' is a fabric sculpture comprising sections of silk kimono, antique indigo-dyed silk, and silk thread. Created by Biswas from kimono donated to the artist during her Kashima Artist in Residence in Beppu, Oita, Japan, the artist worked alongside local Japanese artisans (seamstresses) in realising her design for 'Stitch by stitch'. Flag-like in structure, it's form both invites and simultaneously 'refuses' being worn. Created for exhibition as part of the 'Mixed Bathing World Triennial 2015', Oita, Japan, 'Stitch by stitch', was subsequently exhibited as part of Biswas's two-person exhibition in Tainan, Taiwan, and further stitching added to its form by Biswas in 2021 when the sculpture was shown as part of Biswas's solo exhibition 'Lumen: Sutapa Biswas' at Kettle's Yard, University of Cambridge, UK.
The project was supported by the Agency for Culture, Government of Japan. Medium: Silk, antique indigo-dyed silk, silk thread.
